Building with Nature: Our Commitment to Sustainable Development & Local Wildlife Protection

Traditionally, new developments have been seen as a threat to wildlife, but at Tabley Homes, we believe housing and nature can thrive side by side.

Across the UK, one in seven species is now at risk of extinction. Yet, when nature’s recovery is designed into the planning and building process, development can benefit everyone - from wildlife populations to people, communities, and the planet.

When building homes, we believe that the homes people need should also help nature recover. Therefore, we are creating communities where access to green space is the norm, not a luxury, and where every development plays its part in tackling the climate and nature crises.

Our Commitment to Ecology

At Tabley Homes, true sustainability goes beyond energy-efficient design or eco-friendly materials. For us, it’s about creating homes and communities that are built to last, work in harmony with their surroundings, and actively contribute to the local ecosystem.

That’s why, at Beeston Park, we commissioned Rachel Hacking Ecology Limited to carry out extensive ecological surveys and guide our wildlife protection measures—ensuring our work enhances, rather than harms, the local environment. From concept through to completion, ecology is not an afterthought—it’s embedded in the very fabric of our plans.

Protecting Local Bat Populations

Our approach at Beeston Park demonstrates this commitment in action:

Following detailed surveys, we discovered a thriving population of local bats. To protect them, we’re creating a dedicated bat loft above one of our garages and installing permanent bat boxes throughout the development. This specially designed space provides safe roosting and flying areas for species including the Brown Long-eared Bat and Common and Soprano Pipistrelle.

The loft includes multiple access points, internal roosting crevices, and even natural materials from the original roost to make it familiar for returning bats. Ten permanent bat boxes will also be built into the new homes, offering additional habitats that blend seamlessly with the development design.

These thoughtful measures ensure that bats can continue to thrive, even as new homes take shape, proof that development can support, rather than disrupt, local wildlife.

Supporting Birds, Hedgehogs, and Beyond

Our ecological focus extends far beyond bats. Surveys revealed that the site is home to several bird species, including Swallows, Wrens, and Jackdaws. To replace lost nesting sites, covered nest boxes will be installed under extended eaves, providing shelter and space for future nesting seasons.

We’re also thinking at ground level, with dedicated hedgehog highways built into garden fencing, allowing hedgehogs to safely move between gardens to feed, mate, and explore. Each fence will include small, clearly marked access holes to encourage residents to keep these routes open. These simple, effective features ensure our outdoor spaces remain connected for wildlife.

Our Vision for the Future

We want to build developments that help nature recover and reduce climate impacts. Beeston Park is designed to enhance biodiversity, protect the environment, and create places where people can enjoy the beauty of nature on their doorstep.

Our approach is rooted in the belief that sustainable development must:

A Greener Future for All

By weaving biodiversity into every stage of our developments, we’re helping to make sure new homes don’t just provide shelter for people, but also for the wildlife that calls these landscapes home.

At Tabley Homes, we see every site as part of a bigger picture: a landscape of shared responsibility and natural balance. Because when we build in harmony with nature, we’re not just creating beautiful homes; we’re helping nature recover, one community at a time.
